About
Camp Courage is a one week, hands-on glimpse into the world of firefighters seen from a women’s perspective for young women ages 16-20 years old. The camp is designed to encourage female interest in the fire service, and allow young women of high school age to get the sense of what it takes to be a firefighter in today’s world. Each camper will participate in daily activities that will mimic the real-world experiences of an on-duty firefighter, which will include proper use of fire extinguishers, deploying fire hoses, search and rescue, high angle rescue, auto extrication, basic first aid concepts and much more. Each camper will be instructed by highly motivated, successful women in the fire service and will be supervised with every scenario performed. Each scenario will be performed while wearing proper personal protective equipment which will be fitted to each individual camper, from boots to helmet, and everything in between.
The Topeka Fire Department created Camp Courage to empower, inspire and support strong female leaders and encourage them to pursue a career in the fire service.
