Disabled Persons & Handicapped Parking

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that a percentage of the total parking spaces in any parking garage or lot be ADA accessible spaces. If you have questions regarding accessibility, contact us at 785-368-3916, or by email.

The City of Topeka provides 53 on-street ADA accessible parking spaces downtown. There are 54 off-street ADA accessible parking spaces divided appropriately between our parking garages and lots. This exceeds the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Meter Hoods

Parking meter hoods are available, for a monthly fee, for drivers with a severe mobility impairments. This does not apply to all drivers with a disabled parking permit, and each case is evaluated individually. Contact the Parking office at 785-368-3931, or email us for more information.

Accessible Parking Installation For Your Lots

If you own a parking lot and want to install accessible parking spaces, you may need a permit from the Development Services office. Contact them at 785-368-3704. The spaces also need to meet city design standards and your design may need to be reviewed by the City Engineering Division. Contact us at 785-368-3020.

Disabled Parking Permits

The City does not issue disabled parking permits, these are issued by the Shawnee County Motor Vehicle Department.
