Crimes That Can Be Reported Online

Electronic reporting is a convenient way for you, as a crime victim, to file a police report in a manner that best suits your schedule.  Here you will have a mechanism to report minor, non-felony, crimes in an efficient manner that does not further intrude into your daily life.  Reports that are required for insurance claims, reimbursement claims, lost funds, and minor thefts can be filed here.  This report is intended to be a service to you.  However, to provide you with the best possible service any crimes of a felonious, violent, or sexual nature, require an officer response and field investigation.

Once your report is completed you will receive an automated email with your Citizen Report Case Number.  Your report will be received and reviewed by an investigations administrative sergeant and will be logged and routed to the proper investigative unit.  You should know that some cases may be directly referred for prosecution, others may receive additional review by a specific investigative squad, and if there are no investigative leads it may become inactive until further information develops.  In the event that your case is assigned to a detective for follow up investigation, you will be contacted by the assigned detective.

To reach a specific investigations squad please call 785-368-9400.  If you want to request personal contact with an officer please call 785-368-9551.  We are open 24/7 and we will always have a station officer posted at 320 S. Kansas.  Thank you and we look forward to serving you.

Required Information

To best serve you, we require a means of reliable contact.  In order to completed the online report you must have the following:

Crimes Reportable Online

Theft or lost property under $1,500, Unlawful use of a financial card under $5,000, Identity theft with losses under $5,000, property damage under $1,000, phone harassment. (Please see below for further guidance)

  • Theft and lost or missing personal property
  • Your property must be reported by you and cannot be reported by another.  To fulfill the statutory requirements, you must be able to demonstrate an interest in the lost or stolen property.  Use the online system to report property losses under $1,500 in value.  Should there be physical evidence (blood, fingerprints, trace evidence) left behind of the reported crime, then we would require a personal response.  Evidence such as video, photographs, and documents can be attached to the online report.  Please do not report burglaries, vehicle (automobile/ATV/boats/aircraft) thefts, or thefts of firearms online.

  • Unlawful use of financial information
  • You can report online anytime someone has used your credit card/debit card or bank information to purchase goods and services.  Documentation of those charges can be attached to this report.  Any value in excess of $5,000 will require a personal response.  Either you can make the report with the station officer at the LEC or call for an officer to come to your location.

  • Identity Theft (someone used your personal information without your consent)
  • Any time someone uses your personal information without your consent, you may report this online.  If you also suffer a financial loss, please only report online a loss of less than $5,000 (as noted above).  Like the other reports, you may attach the financial documents of the identity theft to the online report.  Please do not file check forgery or counterfeit money reports online as those crimes will likely produce pieces of physical evidence that requires collection.  In those circumstances please initiate a personal response by seeing the station officer or calling an officer to your location.

  • Property damage under $1,000 in estimated value
  • Any time your property is defaced or caused damage that inhibits its use, can be reported online.  Please attach photographs of the damaged or defaced property and list the monetary loss.  You may report any damage under $1,500 via the online reporting system.

  • Harassment by Telephone
  • Any repeated and unwanted contact or threats via a telecommunication device constitutes harassment.  Clearly establish that the contact is unwanted and document the repeated contacts should they follow.  Do not use the online reporting system should there be any type of protective/restraining order in place as that will require a personal response.  Furthermore if any threats conveyed to you indicate an immediacy of action on behalf of the caller, immediately call for law enforcement response.

In summation, please use the online reporting system for non-felonious crime only.  If you would like to confer with the Topeka Municipal Code follow this LINK.  Do not report any violent or sexual crimes online.  Should you have need to report crimes of that nature, we want to best serve you by responding in person.  This way we can conduct a thorough scene investigation and bring additional resources to bear.  Any found property cannot be reported online and we will respond to collect those items.  Do not report vehicle accidents online.  Any disturbance or breech of the public peace will require an officer response.  It is also important that you do not attempt to report any active crime online.  Immediately call for an officer to respond.

For all other reports, or if you’d prefer to speak to an officer directly, please call 785-368-9551.
