1537 SE Washington St. Fire Incident

Topeka, Kan. – The Topeka Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire located at 1537 SE Washington St., Topeka, KS shortly before 1:30 AM on Sunday June 17, 2018.

Upon arrival, the Topeka Fire Department found heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of a vacant house.  Fire crews began an offensive fire attack and conducted a primary and secondary search of the structure; this search confirmed no occupants were inside.  The fire was quickly extinguished, confining the damage to the original structure.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigation Unit responded to perform an origin and cause scene investigation.

The Following is a brief summary from the Fire Investigation Unit;

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be Incendiary, intentionally set at the back wooden deck.
  • No reported injuries associated with this fire incident.
  • Estimated total dollar loss is $7,500.
  • $6,500 in structural loss and $1,000 in content loss.
  • This fire had a response of 3 Engine Companies, 3 Truck Companies, 2 Chief Officers, and 1 Investigator.
  • No sounding smoke alarms were discovered within the structure.

Incident at Mars Manufacturing Plant

The Topeka Fire Department was called to the Mars Manufacturing Plant located at 100 SW MARS Blvd, at approximately 1:13 pm regarding a chemical odor.  Upon investigation, it was determined that a cleaning solution was not being used properly.  Several individuals were assessed on the scene for possible respiratory irritation, but no one was transported to receive medical attention.

The initial response to this incident involved 3 Engine Companies, 2 Truck Company, 1 Battalion Chief, 1 Shift Commander and 1 Safety Officer.

Fire Incident 1801 NE Grantville Rd. L&M Northside Recycling

TOPEKA, Kan. –The Topeka Fire Department responded to a structure fire located at 1801 NE Grantville Rd. Topeka, Kansas shortly after 3:00 PM on Tuesday April 17, 2018.  Upon arrival, fire suppression crews found a fully involved vehicle fire that had spread to the exterior of a machine shop.

Fire suppression crews were able to extinguish the vehicle and the associated structure.  The structure sustained heavy damage to the exterior wall and roof.  Possible contaminated runoff occurred as a result of the fire and extinguishment efforts,   Suppression crews were able to protect nearby drainage ditches from this runoff by placing protective barriers to collect any hazardous materials.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to this incident to perform an origin and cause scene investigation.  The following is a brief summary;

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the origin of the fire to be within a salvaged vehicle on the exterior of the machine shop.  The cause of the fire is listed as Accidental; associated with workers draining fluids from salvaged vehicles.  Arcing from electric tools sparked the fire.
  • Estimated dollar loss – $30,000 (Thirty Thousand Dollars); $25,000 to the machine shop and $5000 associated contents loss.
  • The initial response to this fire involved three Engine Companies, two Truck Companies, Two Battalion Chiefs and one Fire Investigator.
  • Other agencies assisting with this incident included Westar Energy, and American Medical Response.
  • The fluids being collected from the salvaged vehicles were intentionally being drained into holding containers.  The addition of water during the fire suppression efforts allowed for the fluids to overflow the containers, which precipitated the collection of water runoff.
  • Smoke detectors were not present within the machine shop.

Fire Incident, 1717 SW Harp Place

Topeka, Kan. – The Topeka Fire Department responded to a structure fire located at 1717 SW Harp Place, Topeka, Kansas just before 9:00 AM on Monday April 16, 2018.  Upon arrival, fire crews reported single story residence fully involved with fire.  Due to the extent of the fire, the dwelling located at 1725 SW Harp Pl. sustained exterior damage as a result of radiant heat.  Fire crews confirmed that all occupants exited the dwelling without injury.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to perform an origin and cause scene investigation.  The Following is a brief summary:

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be Accidental.
  • The area of fire origin was determined to be within the living room.
  • No injuries were associated with this fire scene.
  • Estimated dollar loss to 1717 SW Harp PL- $90,000.00 (Ninety Thousand Dollars). Structural dollar loss $60,000 (Sixty Thousand Dollars). Content loss is $30,000 (Thirty Thousand Dollars).
  • Estimated dollar loss to 1725 SW Harp Pl. – $3,000 (Three Thousand Dollars) in structural damage.
  • The overall response to this incident included four (4) Engine Companies, three (3) Truck Companies, two (2) Chief Officers, and three (3) Investigators.
  • Other agencies assisting at the fire scene; Kansas Gas Service, Westar Energy, AMR, Topeka Police Department, and the KS State Fire Marshal’s Office.
  • The American Red Cross assisted two (2) adults and four (4) children.
  • The structure had no working smoke alarms.

2042 SW High Ave. Detached Garage Fire

TOPEKA, Kan. –The Topeka Fire Department responded to a structure fire located at 2042 SW High Ave. Topeka, Kansas shortly after 5:00 PM on Sunday April 15, 2018.  Upon arrival, fire suppression crews advised heavy fire showing from a detached garage at the back of the dwelling.  The fire was extinguished, but not before the fire caused substantial radiant heat damage to the vinyl siding of the associated dwelling and the structures addressed to the north (2038 SW High Ave.).  A search of the associated dwelling revealed it to be vacant at the time of the fire.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to this incident to perform an origin and case scene investigation.  The following is a brief summary;

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as Incendiary; Intentionally Set.
  • Estimated dollar loss – $15,000 (Fifteen Thousand Dollars); $5,000 to the detached garage and $10,000 radiant heat damage to adjacent structures.  The detached garage was considered a total loss.
  • The initial response to this fire involved Three (3) Engine Companies, Two (2) Truck Companies, Two (2) Battalion Chiefs and one (1) Fire Investigator.
  • Other agencies assisting with this incident included Westar Energy, Kansas Gas Service, American Medical Response and the Topeka Police Department.
  • Smoke detectors were not present.

306 SE Lake St. Structure Fire Incident

TOPEKA, Kan. –The Topeka Fire Department Responded to a structure fire located at 306 SE Lake St., Topeka, Kansas just before 10:00 PM on Friday April 13, 2018.  Upon arrival, fire crews found the single story wooden frame residential structure with smoke and flames visible. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, keeping it confined to the structure of fire origin. A search of the residence revealed there were no occupants.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to this incident, to perform an origin and cause scene investigation; the following is a brief summary:

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be undetermined, pending further investigation.
  • Estimated dollar loss – $20,000.00 (Twenty Thousand Dollars); $10,000.00 (Ten Thousand Dollars) structural loss and $10,000.00 (Ten Thousand Dollars) contents loss.
  • The initial response to this fire involved Three (3) Engine Companies, One (1) Truck Company, One (1) Aerial Ladder Company, One (1) Battalion Chief, One (1) Shift Commander and an Investigator.
  • One adult and one child were displaced from the structure as a result of the fire.
  • Assisting agencies at this incident included the Kansas Gas Service, Westar Energy and the Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross.
  • No working smoke detectors were located within the residence.

3222 SW Sena Dr. Structure Fire Incident

TOPEKA, Kan. –The Topeka Fire Department Responded to a reported structure fire located at 3222 SW Sena Dr. at approximately 6:30 AM on Tuesday April 10, 2018.  Upon arrival, fire crews found the single story residential structure with smoke and flames visible. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, keeping the fire confined to the structure of fire origin. A primary search was conducted, to ensure all occupants had evacuated.  During the search of the structure, one unresponsive dog was located and evacuated from the residence; firefighters were able to successfully resuscitate the dog. All other occupants were able to self-evacuate the structure with no injuries reported.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to this incident to determine the origin and cause for the fire.  The following is a brief summary;

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be undetermined.
  • Estimated dollar loss – $50,000.00 (Fifty Thousand Dollars); $40,000.00 (Forty Thousand Dollars) structural loss and $10,000.00 (Ten Thousand Dollars) contents loss.

Topeka Fire Department Responds to a House Fire 1501 SW Polk St. Topeka, KS

Topeka, Kan. – The Topeka Fire Department responded to a structure fire located at 1501 SW Polk St. Topeka, Kansas just after 3:30 AM on Saturday March 31, 2018.  Upon arrival, fire crews reported smoke and flames showing from the rear of the two story wood framed house.  Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire with an offensive attack keeping it contained to the structure of fire origin.

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be Incendiary, with multiple areas of fire origin.
  • The house was vacant and no injuries were associated with this fire scene.

  • Zero dollars in content loss.
  • This fire had a response of three (3) Engine Companies, three (3) Truck Companies, two (2) Chief Officers, and an Investigator.

  • The structure had no working smoke alarms.

3016 SE Mareta Circle Structure Fire

TOPEKA, Kan. –The Topeka Fire Department responded to a structure fire located at 3016 SW Mareta Circle Topeka, Kansas shortly before 11:30 AM on Sunday March 18, 2018.  Upon arrival, fire suppression crews advised heavy fire showing from a town home structure.  All occupants of the affected complex were able to escape unharmed.  The fire was extinguished, keeping the damage contained to one (1) of the four (4) units of the complex. Three (3) other units within the complex were unaffected and the occupants were not displaced as a result of this incident.

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as Accidental; associated with a juvenile playing with a lighter.
  • Estimated dollar loss – $30,000 (Thirty Thousand Dollars); $20,000 to the dwelling and $10,000 to contents.
  • The initial response to this fire involved Three (3) Engine Companies, Two (2) Truck Companies, Two (2) Battalion Chiefs and an Investigator.
  • Other agencies assisting with this incident included Westar Energy, Kansas Gas Service and the Capitol Chapter of the American Red Cross.
  • Smoke were present within the complex and alerted the occupants.

1297 SW Macvicar Ave. Trashcan / Garage Fire

TOPEKA, Kan. –The Topeka Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire located at 1297 SW Macvicar Ave. Topeka, Kansas shortly before 01:00 AM on Sunday March 18, 2018.  A person driving in the area found a trashcan on fire in the back alley of 1297 SW Macvicar Ave.  The fire quickly spread from the trashcan to an adjacent detached garage.  Fire suppression crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but not before the garage sustained moderate fire damage.

A Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to this incident to assist in determining the origin and cause for the fire.  The following is a brief summary;

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as Undetermined; pending further investigation
  • Estimated dollar loss – $10,000 (Ten Thousand Dollars); $10,000 to the garage structure and adjacent wooden fence.  No content damage.
  • The initial response to this fire involved Three (3) Engine Companies, Two (2) Truck Companies, Two (2) Battalion Chiefs and an Investigator.
