TOPEKA, Kan. –The Topeka Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire located at 5620 SW 22nd Street Topeka, Kansas shortly after 12:30 AM on Wednesday February 21, 2018. Upon arrival, fire crews found light smoke on the first floor of the high-rise apartment complex. . Firefighters found a small fire contained within a trash bin, centrally located in the trash room of the complex.
The sprinkler system activated appropriately and kept the fire suppressed until firefighters could arrive. Firefighters removed the trash bin from the structure and finished extinguishing the fire. Fire damage was contained to the trash bin and surrounding trash chute system. All occupants of the structure were able to either shelter in place or evacuate unharmed.
A Topeka Fire Department Investigation’s Unit responded to this incident to assist in determining the origin and cause for the fire. The following is a brief summary;
- Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as undetermined; pending further investigation.
- Estimated dollar loss – $500 (Five Hundred Dollars); $500.00 associated with the structure of fire origin; No content loss.
- The initial response to this fire involved Three (3) Engine Companies, Two (2) Truck Companies, Two (2) Battalion Chiefs and an Investigator.
- The fire suppression system and audible smoke alarm systems operated as designed.
