Discovering Apes Building opened in two phases between 1981 and 1985. The Orangutan exhibit was completed in 1981 and provides a unique experience for the visitor to view animals at tree-top level.
In 1985 the Gorilla Encounter exhibit opened to the public. Visitors can enjoy an interactive experience as they walk through a glass tunnel, one of the first of its kind, and examine the Gorillas habitat.
The zoo opened the Outdoor orangutan habitat in June 2003; providing an opportunity for the zoo's borean orangutans to be outside weather permitting.
