29th Street from Wanamaker to Urish Project
The 29th Street from SW Urish Road to SW Wanamaker Road is a $9.58 million countywide half-cent sales tax project approved by voters in 2004. The 6500 foot project will take two years to build, beginning in March 2010, and will include widening the roadway from two lanes to five lanes, reconstructing and enlarging the roundabout at 29th and Urish, and reconstructing the 29th and Wanamaker intersection, including updating the traffic signals. This joint City/County project is being administered by the City of Topeka. The City’s contact person is City Engineer Shawn Bruns. She may be contacted at 368-3842 or sbruns@topeka.org. The project is being designed by Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC). PEC’s project manager is Terry Coder. He can be reached at 233-8300 or terry.coder@pec1.com.
Access During Construction and Phasing
All properties adjacent to the project will have at least one point of access to them at all times during construction. Access to properties may require the use of detour routes or temporary roads and driveways. Some entrances and side roads will need to be constructed one half at a time
Year 2010 Phase I In order to build the roundabout and the new small bridge and culverts between Urish Road and Kingsrow Road, it will be necessary to make full roadway closures. The intersection of SW 29th and Urish will be closed first for about four months. Through SW 29th Street and SW Urish Road traffic will be carried on detours. Local traffic will be carried on Temporary Access Roads.
Year 2010 Phase II After the intersection of SW 29th and Urish is completed and opened to traffic, SW 29th Street will be closed to all traffic between SW Kingsrow Road and SW Mission View Drive. Through SW 29th Street traffic will be carried on a detour. Local access will be by existing roads and drives.
Year 2011 SW 29th Street between SW Kingsrow Road and SW Wanamaker Road will be constructed one-half at a time. It is anticipated that traffic will be carried through construction adjacent to the work zone.
