Why haven’t charges been filed on my case?
The DA or City Attorney’s offices will decide if and when charges are filed. The Topeka Police Department will take the reports and forward all the information to the appropriate office for their consideration of charges.
Why is my case closed?
If there is not enough information on a case such as burglary or theft, then your case most likely will be closed. However, if there is significant evidence and reason, then your case may be reopened at a future date.
How can I get my property back?
If the Topeka Police Department recovers property that is similar to what you had taken, a follow up call by CVA or a detective would be in order. Once that property has been cleared for return, you will be notified. It is important to record serial numbers for your property, as that is the best determination of ownership. You may add serial numbers to your case by calling Records, 368-9474.
What is a PFA (restraining order)? How do I get one?
A protection from abuse is a civil order that is ordered by the courts. The order prohibits 2 parties from having contact from one another. Only a court can determine if an order should be issued and the terms of the order. The process for obtaining a PFA may be given in greater detail by contacting CVA, 368-9064.
