The
Bike Unit of the Topeka Police Department
has been in operation since the spring
of 1993. Currently the unit is staffed
by seven officers, which include a Corporal
and Sergeant.

The equipment used by the unit consists
of TREK bicycles, BRAT WEAR Clothing,
OAKLEY sunglasses, and a cross match of
UNCLE MIKE'S and SAFARILAND web gear.
A detailed study was conducted prior to
the selection of equipment for the bike
officers. The brands selected are still
being used as they have passed the test
of time.
In order to be a member of the unit, officers
must pass the qualifications set by the
International Police Mountain Bike Association
(I.P.M.B.A.). The unit has it own certified
instructor and classes are provided yearly
for surrounding agencies needing officers
trained for police bike units. Training
for bike officers includes a firearm course,
designed with the bike officer in mind.
Our training includes the expertise of
our own certified TREK bike mechanic.
The Bike Unit operates as a supplemental
patrol unit, capable of assisting any
unit within the department. We use a sophisticated
crime analysis program to identify potential
high crime risk areas. Once a target is
selected we prepare a comprehensive plan
consisting of enforcement and a problem
solving team, consisting of Community
Officers, Safe Streets and Crime Prevention
to resolve the problem. The Crime Analysis
program provides us a measuring tool for
evaluating the success or failure of an
operation.
The Bike Unit is a rapid response team
designed to react to any number of crime
or community issues. Our success rate
has earned the unit special recognition
by the department and the adoration of
many of Topeka's neighborhoods.
Bike officers have a diverse area of experience.
Several of the Bike officers assist in
the Police Departments Police Academy.
We have members specialized in S.W.A.T.
training, Crisis Negotiations, Defensive
Tactics and D.E.A. issues. Bike officers
have been trained in environmental code
investigations and participate in special
events connected with holidays and VIP
protection. Bike officer's work yearly
in the promotion of bike safety, through
school visits and Topeka's Great American
Bike Race.
