Topeka Fire Department | Training and Safety Division
The Division of Training and Safety within the Topeka Fire Department is dedicated to providing the highest quality training to our firefighters so that they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to safely mitigate fire/medical/hazardous emergency incidents while minimizing the risks to themselves, civilians and the environment.We accomplish this by developing and delivering:
- Training and orientation to all new hires
- Training of essential firefighting skills
- Medical training
- Re-certification training for medical knowledge, skills and abilities
- Promotional exams
- Driver training
The Division also coordinates with expert instructors within and outside the department to facilitate training and education on subjects such as hazardous materials and technical rescue.
Our Training Officers serve a dual role and are responsible for occupational safety issues.
The Safety Officers respond to emergencies and are responsible for:
- Monitoring fireground conditions
- Continually evaluating hazards and risks
- Ensuring Safety Standards are followed
- Identifying training issues regarding safety
