Elevator Inspection (What We Do):
The City of Topeka Elevator Division is comprised of two Elevator Inspectors, each assigned to particular elevators in the city. The Elevator Inspectors leave their office to make inspections each day at approximately 8:30 a.m. and return at 4:00 p.m. In general, any inspection called for one day is the next day's workload excluding holidays and weekends. The Inspection Request Line is 785.368.3905 and inspection requests are entered into a computer to be forwarded to the appropriate inspector.
Why we inspect?
We check all safety devices on all units. On hydraulic units we check to see if oil leaks from the pistons into the pit, if the oil return system is in proper operational condition, and if there is a clean pit. On the top of a traction car we check the hoist cables and governor rope for proper wires and discoloring of cables. While on top of the car we check the door locks and check to make sure the landing doors will close automatically as required by code at the time of installation. This also applies to hydraulic elevators.
What we inspect?
We inspect the following units; escalators, access lifts, passenger elevators, freight elevators, disabled lifts, dumb waiters and moving walks. All new elevator units installed to provide public transportation are inspected by the Elevator Inspectors. A permit is required to install elevators in the City of Topeka.
