  • Established in 1961, predating the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964
  • Mission: To ensure fair and equal rights to all citizens of Topeka in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodation.
  • Goal: To proactively address discrimination, real or perceived, using conflict resolution skills as a first (and sometimes final) step to resolve issues in covered areas.

  • Continue with quarterly Town Hall meetings
  • Increase visits to NIAs, other groups to talk about our mission
  • Work with Public Communications Coordinator to improve quality of publications issued by our office (brochures, flyers, etc.)
  • Improve tracking of informal complaints for future reports
  • Track formal and informal complaints by “Basis of Complaint” for future reports
  • Provide a semiannual report ( due June 2007)
  • Continued partnership with the Topeka Police Department, the City Manager, the NAACP, the Department of Justice-Community Relations Service and community members in the development of the Law Enforcement Partnership Panel
  • Continued participation with the R.A.C.E. Committee
