Parks and Recreation | Oakland New Directions

The New Directions Learning Academy is a unique program that allows students to receive a diploma from their sponsoring high school. Enrollment is easy! If you are a Shawnee County resident, 18 years of age or older and whose class has already graduated, or you have a GED and you want to earn a high school diploma: Choose a flexible schedule and the number of hours you want to attend a week. Pay a $20 enrollment fee. New Directions' staff will coordinate any necessary communication with the high school you last attended.

New Directions Learning Academy
This unique program allows you to receive a diploma from your sponsoring high school. Enrollment is easy! If you are 18 years of age or older and your class has already graduated, or you have a GED and you want to earn a high school diploma, please call 234-9887. Courses offered include all the graduation requirements in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies and a variety of electives. For $20 you can attend from August until May during the hours that fit your schedule. Stop by the school and enroll.
  • Hours: Monday – Thursday 8:30 am – 9 pm
  • Friday 8:30 am – 3 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday CLOSED
Sign up at Oakland Community Center, 801 NE Poplar, Topeka, Kansas 66616, (tel: 785-234-9887) or 923 SW Fairlawn, Suite 141, (785-228-2336). Flexible schedule - come one day or five. Or become a virtual student which allows you to access most classes from home

Courses offered include all of the graduate requirements in Math, Science, English and Social Studies and a variety of electives, such as:

  • Computer classes
    Keyboarding, PageMaker

  • Microsoft Office '97
    Word, Access, Excel, Power Point

You must sign up at Oakland Community Center. Every journey begins with the first step! New Directions also provides an ESL program on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those students who are interested in improving their English skills
