The Oakland Community Center was built in 1977 and was opened to the public in 1978. Oakland was funded by General Obligation Bonds, Federal Reserve Sharing, and other city funds. Oakland primarily serves northeast Topeka and portions of northeastern Shawnee County. Oakland community center has a staff roster of one facility director, Betty Kirchner, one assistant director, Lance Wilson, and 10-12 part time employees.
The Center serves as a community meeting hall, hosting the Oakland Neighborhood Improvement Association and other groups, and can be rented for private functions such as birthday parties, wedding receptions, etc. The Oakland Center also houses a Creative Play Preschool and New Directions Learning academy.
Oakland Community Center is located in Oakland Billard Park, which includes the Oakland swimming pool (outdoor seasonal pool), the Mousetrap Skateboard Park, baseball and softball diamonds, and the Shunga Trail.
