Gage Park History
In the year of his death in 1899, the heirs of Guilford Gage donated 80 acres of land west of Topeka between 6th and 10th Streets to the City of Topeka. What was once a family farm was now the beginning of Gage Park.
The deed stated that the park was for the "benefit of the health, comfort and recreation of the citizens of Topeka and their friends..." It would eventually encompass 160 acres, and become a regional tourist attraction in its own right.
The park that once boasted it had the best rose garden in the country, by winning a Better Homes and Garden Magazine competition, and "the world's largest concrete swimming pool" according to some, would go on to assemble a unique collection of historic and innovative attractions during the next century.
Gage Park has indeed been making memories since 1899, and continues to play a very important role in the lives of "the citizens of Topeka and their friends..."
