Old Prairie Town at Ward-Meade Historic Site has something blooming almost all year, from crocus in February to witchhazel in December. Sure, you've seen "Prairie Crossings" and the living history program, but did you know that the Botanical Gardens at Ward-Meade contain 550 varieties of trees and shrubs? Here are some peak blooming times:
  • April - tulips, magnolias, forsythias, dogwoods, redbuds
  • May - crabapples, quince, pearlbush, and cotoneaster
  • June-August - 6,000 annual flowers in 30 beds
  • October - maples, oaks, burning bushes, and sumac show fall colors.
Tulip Time
2009 will see “tulip time” moving to Old Prairie Town. 35,000 tulips and daffodils have been planted along with 70 annual and shrub beds which will transform into masses of red, yellow, orange, white and purple as the flowers emerge and bloom in April. Scheduled opening is approximately April 10 and runs for two weeks. Please call 368-3888 for more information about hours and admission fee.

Reinisch Rose Garden/Doran Rock Garden
Peak blooming times for the 6,000 roses are late May into early June, and again in early to mid-September. The annual flowers look their best during July and August. The tulips in the Rock Garden will bloom in April.

Come enjoy Anna’s Place, A Victorian Reading Garden with a water feature and areas set aside for reading or contemplation.
