Thank you to all Project Takeover/Makeover 2006 participants, sponsors and supporters!

Project takeover/Makeover 2006 was an initiative executed over four Saturdays beginning in April, when volunteers “took over” and cleaned-up targeted neighborhoods. Property owners in the neighborhood were asked to indicate what free “makeovers” they wished for their property. Makeovers included trash and debris clean-up, removal of fencing, light hauling, light landscaping, light tree trimming, and easement maintenance. Property owners also sat out their trash, tree limbs, old appliances, old furniture, etc for volunteers to haul away. In conjunction with the Project, four tire amnesties were held to dispose of old tires.
The targeted neighborhoods were Central Topeka, Oakland, East Topeka North and South, Eastend, Ward-Meade, Old Town, North Topeka East, North Topeka West, Hi Crest, Likins-Foster, Jefferson Square, and Central Highland Park.

Neighborhood clean-ups have taken place for many years. However, Project Takeover/Makeover 2006 was an unprecedented collaboration and cooperation between The City of Topeka, Shawnee County, Keep America Beautiful, local Neighborhood Improvement Associations and private businesses. While all have administered their own respective activities in the past, it was the combined efforts that provided noticeable differences. These sponsors had a major presence throughout April and May as they worked to refine the collaborative structure that has been forged to ensure sustainability for future neighborhood clean-up efforts.
With help from 25 City and County organizers, 48 sponsors, and 45 volunteer groups, the effort over the four Saturdays resulted in:
- Total tons of trash and debris hauled away: 1,512 tons
- Total volunteers: 945 (many worked several times)
- Total work orders: 2,243
- Total tires disposed of: 8,916
