The City Manager serves as the city’s chief executive officer and is responsible for providing professional leadership in the administration and implementation of all city operations and the policies, goals and vision set forth by the Mayor and City Council.
Dan Stanley has been appointed the Interim City Manager. He will oversee the day to day operations of the City’s 1,400 employees and $224 million budget. He began employment on July 15, 2011.
Before returning to Topeka, he served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs under President George W. Bush. He was nominated by President Bush on May 13, 2005 and confirmed by the Senate on June 30 that same year. As Assistant Secretary, he was responsible for all legislative coordination between the Department of Defense and the United States Congress.
Prior to his nomination, He served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Senate Affairs. Additionally, he served as both a Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army during the initial combat operations in Afghanistan.
Mr. Stanley has also served as Secretary of Administration for the State of Kansas, and as Administrative Assistant, Legislative Director, and Defense Policy Advisor to Senator Bob Dole (R-KS).
Additionally, Mr. Stanley is a veteran of the submarine force - enlisting in the Navy in 1973 and retiring from the Naval Reserve in 1996 with the rank of Commander.
He graduated from the State University of New York Empire State College with a degree in nuclear technology. He also attended the University of Kansas and the Armed Forces Staff College.
