Wanamaker Widening Project Nears CompletionTOPEKA, Kan. – A road project months in the making will open to the public on time and on budget. Southwest Wanamaker Road from 29th to 37th streets will be open to through-traffic on Wednesday.
Three of the five lanes – two inside lanes and the middle turning lane – will open. Outside lanes will remain closed while workers finish dirt work in the right-of-way. The improvements include five-lanes of pavement with curb and gutter, an underground storm sewer system to collect storm water runoff, walkways on both sides of SW Wanamaker Road, a pedestrian signal at SW 34th Terrace, a bridge widening, and street lighting.
The $6.2 million project was funded by the Federal Fund Exchange Program through the Kansas Department of Transportation.
The stretch has been closed since the first week in March.
