Topeka Boulevard Bridge
Final Design Phase
Bridge Type And Alignment
The recommendation of the conceptual study for the replacement of the Topeka Boulevard Bridge was to replace the bridge on the existing alignment. The first three spans of both ends of the bridge will be reinforced concrete slab spans. This bridge type has a shallow cross section and will allow the required minimum clearance at the south railroad track to be met and still lower the bridge profile a useful amount. The remaining approach spans on both side of the river unit will be continuous composite rolled weathering steel beams. Using steel beams will allow for longer spans and allow the spans to be set to meet horizontal clearance requirements. Continuous composite welded weathering steel plate girder spans will be used for the river unit to utilize the existing piers. Features that improve the bridge aesthetics such as lighting, handrails, gateways, pier treatments and textures will be added to the substructure and superstructure of the replacement bridge.
Interim Alternatives - I-70/Polk Quincy And Topeka Boulevard
A Topeka Boulevard and I-70 interchange were examined as part of the planning phase. No plans to replace of the I-70/Polk-Quincy Viaduct are currently a part of the Comprehensive Highway Program that is scheduled to be completed in 2009. Any replacement project would be scheduled and funded after that time. Several different alternatives were examined to provide better interim access to Topeka Boulevard from I-70. At this time, the Union Pacific Railroad has tentatively agreed to abandon the City Lead Track. The profile grade of Topeka Boulevard will be lowered and the end of the bridge moved north. This will enhance any future connection to I-70. A 1st Street/Topeka Blvd. intersection will be constructed. However, the Kansas Department of Transportation Planning indicate that an intersection with 1st Street would have to be removed in order to place a Topeka Boulevard/I-70 interchange in the future.
